Rector of University of Indonesia (UI).
He is a Professor of Sociology UI who experts in the field of urban sociology. Interest in his study focuses on urban research and urbanization, globalization, the problem poverty to study post-colonial society (sociology beyond society). He S1 graduated in the Department of Sociology, FISIP-UI, in January 1989, and earned his doctorate (Ph.D. der Sozialwissenschaften) in the Faculty of Sociology, Universitaet Bielefeld, Germany in 1995. He had become dean of FISIP-UI (two periods) during the year 2002-2007. In 2007 he was elected as Rector of the UI period 2007-2012 in the age of 44 years and made history as the youngest Rector of UI. Previous managerial experience is never to be Secretary of the Board of Trustees (2001-2002) and Deputy Director of the UI Center for Japanese Studies (1997-2003). He is a steering committee of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of High Learning (ASAIHL), and the Sasakawa Young Leaders Forum (SYLFF). In addition, he noted as members of the ASEAN University Network (AUN), South-East Asia and Taiwan Universities (ONE), the ASEAN-European Academic University Network (ASEA Uninet), Federation of Universities of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW), Southeast Asian Education Ministers Organization for Tropical Medicine and Public Health (SEAMEO TROPMED), and the Association of Universities of Asia Pacific (AUAP). In the intellectual career he also recorded as a member of the Association of Sociology of Indonesia, The International Communitarian Society, based in America, and the International Urban Anthropological Association (IUAS) based in the Netherlands. With the intellectual and managerial background is, he has influence and extensive network with various parties in the industrial sectors, political parties, intellectuals, and policy makers.
