Seminar and Book Launching

Research Center for Climate Change – University of Indonesia (RCCC – UI) together with Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Science – University of Indonesia (FMIPA – UI) have been conducting a seminar on the topic of National Parks and Ecosystem Services on September 5, 2014. The seminar was held at Balai Sidang UI and the participants were coming from various institutions such as Akademi Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (AIPI), Ministry of Forestry RI, Ministry of Research and Technology RI, Restorasi Ekosistem Indonesia, Ltd., Conservation International, Kehati, and students from another universities.

The seminar opening was brought by Dean of FMIPA UI, Dr. rer. nat. Abdul Haris, then followed up by a foreword from representative of Minister of Forestry, Dr. Bambang Supriyanto. Dr. Bambang told us that by the year of 2030, national income from ecosystem services utilization would reach Rp19 billion per year. In order to be able to reach that nominal, intersectional synergy at national parks and its supporting infrastructures would be needed.

As one of the speakers, Dr. Bambang also said that government has given emphasize for current management plan of national park utilization more into protection and preservation which fit inside environment support capability. From another perspective, Wahyudi Wardoyo from The Nature Conservancy explained that biodiversity could be advantagous in ecosystem. Dr. Chris Margules from James Cook University, Australia, told the audience about the greatness of national parks in Australia such as Kakadu National Park and New South Wales National Park.

On the same time, Head of RCCC – UI, Jatna Supriatna, Ph.D. also launched a new book entitled Berwisata Alam di Taman Nasional. The book is published by Obor Foundation and tells the story about the author’s trip on national parks inside and outside of Indonesia, also some suggestions on managing national parks in Indonesia. He hopes that by reading this book, recreation at national park would be a new trend in society.
