Dr. Mochamad Indrawan
“Didi” Mochamad Indrawan has academic and practical backgrounds in ecology, nature conservation, and sustainable development. Having graduated from Dept of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences, Universitas Indonesia, Pak Didi went on to obtain an MSc in Ecology from University of Aberdeen, and his Doctoral from Universitas Indonesia with the dissertation topic “Island biogeography and biology conservation in Togean Island, Central Sulawesi”.
Since 1991 Pak Didi has been undertaking the long term research and outreach in Banggai and Togean, Central Sulawesi, and in 2018, for this consitent work he was awarded with Kalpataru – the RI President’s Award for Environmental Leadership, under the “capacity builder category”.
Pak Didi was also the first elected-president of IdOU – Indonesian Ornithologist Union (2004-10), and helped produce the Union’s hall-mark publication namely IdOU’s checklist of Indonesian birds. When he was chair of Asia Pacific Chapter of Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC), Pak Didi with Dr. Rhett Harrison co-founded field course teaching biodiversity research and conservation targetting Asian Youth.
Pak Didi has taught ecological courses at the University of Indonesia, including tropical forest management and restoration. The biological conservation text book he co-authored with Prof. Richard Primack and Prof. Jatna Supriatna has now had its fourth printing in Indonesia.
A member of two IUCN specialist groups (World Commission on Protected Areas and Bird Red List Authority), Pak Didi has also been a research associate at Kansas University, USA, and visiting scholar at Kyushu University, Japan. His research on Japanese socio-ecological system (satoyama) during his tenure as Asian Public Intellectual senior Fellowship (2012-13) resulted in cross countries’ comparisons with Indonesian agroforestry systems.
In his current stint with RCCC-UI, Pak Didi is leading a book write up presenting voices from the ground for more critical views of SDGs, involving activists and public intellectuals from ASEAN, and Japan – the endeavor of which is supported by APN – Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research.
