Answering the Challenges: The Role of Innovative Science in Building a Sustainable Future

A one day workshop entitled “Answering the Challenges: The Role of Innovative Science in Building a Sustainable Future” had been conducted at University of Indonesia campus, Depok. Hosted by Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences (FMIPA) UI, this workshop was a result from collaboration between Indonesia and Sweden which shared the same ideas of innovation and sustainability. The workshop was held at Balai Sidang UI on June 2nd, 2014 and started with the opening remarks by H.E. Ambassador of Sweden and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Anis, M.Met. (Rector of UI). The line of speakers included Prof. Dr. Bambang P. Brodjonegoro (Vice Minister of Finance), Prof. Dr. Niclas Adler (President of I3L—Indonesia International Institute of Life Sciences), Prof. Dr. Jan Sopaheluwakan (Indonesian Institute of Sciences), Prof. Dr. Sangkot Marzuki (Eijkman Institute of Sciences), General (Ret.) Luhut B. Pandjaitan, MPA (Leader of Bhakti Pertiwi Foundation), Dr. Nurul Taufikurahman (Director Center for Innovation at LIPI), and Dr. Dadang Rukmana (Director for City Planning, Ministry of Public Works). In the afternoon session, Prof. Emil Salim has made a special appearance at the workshop.

Advanced Reptile Taxonomy Training

This seven-day training will be held at RCCC UI (PAU building fl. 8,5) and LIPI Bogor from 9.00 to 17.00. This training is open for the participants who have completed the Basic Reptile Taxonomy course at RCCC UI. It will be covering the topics of:

  1. Research project on focal taxa (individual)
  2. Two-day lab work at LIPI Bogor
  3. Morphometric analysis (software)
  4. Principal Component Analysis (PCA)
  5. Research paper writing
  6. Final research manuscript submit to a journal
  7. Public research article (compulsory)

Basic Reptile Taxonomy Training

RCCC UI hereby presents the training on reptile taxonomy with an expert on herpetology Thasun Amarasinghe. He is also an editor-in-chief of Taprobanica, the journal of Asian biodiversity. There are two levels of training: (1) Basic and (2) Advanced.

(1) Basics of Reptile Taxonomy (September 2014)
This two-day training will be held at RCCC UI (PAU building fl. 8,5) on Saturday and Sunday from 9.00 to 17.00. This training is open (no pre-requirements) for any Indonesian (including undergraduates, , naturalists, researchers, NGOs, etc.) who is interested in taxonomy and its applications. It will be covering the topics of:

  1. Introduction to taxonomy
  2. Importance of type specimens
  3. Scale morphology of reptiles
  4. Morphometric and meristic characters
  5. Keys and identification
  6. Reading taxonomic descriptions
  7. Introduction to The Code (ICZN)
  8. Taxonomic problems
  9. Practical (use of stereo microscope and vernier caliper)
  10. Practical test

Climate change is a natural phenomenon which becomes more complicated in terms of prediction due to various dimensions such as ethics, politics, economics, and humanity which affecting one another. This has been acknowledged and has been an important issue by many of UI’s scientists through their research topics. Through Research Center for Climate Change (RCCC–UI), some of scientists represent multi-disciplinarians and knowledge, and thus become the great opportunity to influence the nation’s policy developments as well as supporting adaptation schemes of local people.

Research Center for Climate Change University of Indonesia (RCCC-UI) have done some project since its established in 2010. Many activities include research program, simposia, training and workshops, general lecture of climate change related issues, and exhibition events.
